Perry will send pole vaulters Lucas Kelley and Andrew Vincent to next week’s Austintown regional.
Kelley, a freshman, matched his winning vault of 13-9 at the Federal League meet and finished second. Vincent finished third at 13-6 to qualify for the second straight year.
“It means a lot,” Kelley said of qualifying in his first season. “I’ve been working for it. I really want to make state to show everybody I’m good.”
Vincent survived a narrow escape at 13-0 to keep his postseason alive. He easily cleared the bar on his third attempt, but his pole tapped the bar for a few seconds. It harmlessly fell backward.
Vincent saw his postseason hang in the balance from the landing mat.
“It was kind of scary,” Vincent said. “At that point, I was like ‘The wind and the pole better not knock it off. Hopefully I’ll get up real quick and they’ll call it an attempt.’”
The two vaulters will be joined at the regional meet by field-event teammates JoJo Tayse, Anna Opricsh and Marisa Knop.
