Katie Burke’s shift of sports has paid big dividends for her and for Phillipsburg’s girls track and field program.
The Stateliners sophomore will be the sole female representative of the garnet and gray at Saturday’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington High School (2 p.m.) as she competes in the pole vault as the school-record holder in the event at 10 feet, 6 inches.
It wasn’t that long ago that Burke’s considerable athletic abilities went in another direction.
“I was a competitive gymnast for seven years up through middle school,” she said. “But my career came to an end because of injuries. My gymnastics coach recommended I try pole vaulting; her daughter was a pole vaulter.”
