LAWRENCE – School record holder Andrew Pope continued a strong indoor season with a regional championship to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s indoor track and field team on Friday at the Region VI Indoor Championships at the University of Kansas’ Anshutz Pavilion.
Pope, who ranks sixth in the nation in the pole vault, captured Hutchinson’s only event victory of the regionals with a clearance of 15 feet, 3 inches. It was at Anshutz Pavilion where Pope set the Hutchinson indoor record of 15 feet, 7 inches.
Pope helped the Blue Dragons finish sixth in the Region VI team standings with 59 points. HCC was third in the Jayhawk West standings with 141.5 points.
Sophomore John Murphy III was a region and Jayhawk West runner-up in the men’s 5,000 meters. He did so running the second-fasted time in HCC indoor history with a time of 15 minutes, 37.95 seconds.
Sophomore Orbelin Rojas was third in both the region and conference in the mile run. Rojas posted a time of 4:26.14.
HCC’s 4×800 meter relay team won a Jayhawk West championship and was a Region VI runner-up. The relay of Paul Cuellar, Eric Jones, Colton Butler and Jesse Lyle ran a league championship time of 7:55.14.
The Blue Dragons scored in eight other events in regional play on Friday.
Murphy placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:14.50. That was also fifth in the Jayhawk West.
Lakin Liebst was sixth in the region and third in the Jayhawk West in the high jump with a clearances of 6-2 3/4.
Jorgeo Spears as sixth and second, respectively, in the long jump going 21-4.
Michael Brown was seventh in the 400 meters in a time of 50.32 seconds.
Paul Cuellar was seventh in the 600 meters in a time of 1:23.81.
Jake Brinkman was seventh in the weight throw with a throw of 45-5 3/4.
Austin Vaden was the top Blue Dragon in the Heptathlon, finishing eighth with 3,851 points.
HCC’s 4×400 meter relay of Ridge Williams, Michael Brown, Pope and Cuellar was sixth with a time of 3:23.21.
The Distance Medley Relay of Helam Hernandez, Malik Adkins, Darryn Rohr and Brent Patton were seventh with a time of 11:16.71.
Colby won the Region VI team championship with 160 points to Coffeyville’s 117. The Trojans won the Jayhawk West with 208 points to Garden City’s 147.5 points. The Blue Dragons were just six points away from second place.
