Pole Vault Legend Bubka to Carry Olympic Flame in Sochi

MOSCOW, February 5 (R-Sport) – World pole vault record holder and 1988 Olympic champion Sergey Bubka will carry the Winter Olympics flame in Sochi on Wednesday, the organizers told R-Sport.

The 50-year-old, who lost out to Thomas Bach in the race for the International Olympic Committee presidency in September, will take the torch through the streets of the Adler district of the Olympic host city.

Later in the day, the flame will sail out into the Black Sea on a yacht and speed into the mountain cluster on a train.

Other notable torchbearers were Olympic champion in volleyball, Vladimir Kondra, and speedskater Svetlana Bazhanova.

The 123-day torch relay will continue on Thursday to finish at the Fisht Olympic Stadium for the Friday’s opening ceremony.

The Sochi 2014 Olympic torch relay began on Red Square in Moscow on October 7, with around 14,000 torchbearers taking part in a record 65,000km journey.

The Sochi Olympics will run from February 7 through 23.
