Pole vault victory fails to raise bar

Not every day is a good day in the pole vault business, even for the best around.

University of South Dakota freshman Chis Nilsen was the easy winner in the men’s college pole vault at Friday’s Howard Wood Dakota Relays, but not at a height he will brag about anytime soon. He cleared 17 feet, 5 inches easily, but in three attempts at 18-.5 – a number he usually blasts through these days – he hit the wall. Or the bar, in this case.

“It’s fun to come out every week, but it’s pretty tiring on the body,” said Nilsen, who executed the highest NCAA Division I vault in the country this year at 18 feet, 9.5 inches at the Sioux City Relays three weeks ago. “Right now I’m just trying to get in that recovery phase so I can get back to doing what I was doing a couple months ago. It’s a process. I’m not really upset about today.”
