The pole vault has long been a Yerington High school track strong point under coach Gary Stone, and that trend continued at last week’s season-opening Silver Stage Meet.
This week, Stone and his Lions will look for more top performances as they compete at the Fernley Meet Saturday (9 a.m.).
“Overall, it was a good first meet. We were able to shake the dust off a little bit,” Stone said of the Silver Stage meet.
Senior Riley Neville, a defending state champion, did not record a miss in the boys pole vault, and stopped jumping after clearing 12-feet, as Stone said the wind came up and they didn’t want to risk further jumping.
Neville won the event by 2-1/2 feet.
Meanwhile, sophomore Dominique Lucier won the girls pole vault at 7-6, with Stone saying that was good for Lucier’s first time out and he sees good things from her this season.
