Pole vaulter Chee’s best not good enough for Asia Masters gold medal

CHINESE-TAIPEI – The rest of the Philippine Team stepped up in the absence of injured anchor Elma Muros-Posadas on Monday as it clinched two silver and three bronze medals to make up for a gold that got away in the 17th Asia Masters Athletics Championships at the Taipei City Sports Parkon Monday.

Antonio Chee tried to to lift the Filipinos’ spirits when he broke his own games record in the pole vault event for men 35-39 years old, only to see his new mark quickly erased by Yang Mu-wei of host Chinese-Taipei in his fourth throw.

Gold medal winner Yang now owns the new record in the event with his heave of 4.40 meters, beating silver medallist Chee’s 3.80 meters, which also surpassed Chee’s own past record of 3.70m established in 2010 in Kuala Lumpur.

Yang Zen-zong of Chinese-Taipei was third (3.50 m).
