Port Huron Northern’s Mackenzie Shell sets state record in pole vault

Port Huron Northern junior Mackenzie Shell set the girls state high school record for the pole vault Wednesday, clearing 12 feet, 10 ½ inches at Saginaw Valley State.

Shell won the event at the indoor meet, and broke the record previously held by Marine City graduate Tori Wesley (12-9 ½).

On Sunday, Shell tied for sixth at the New Balance Nationals, and in February she won an indoor state title.

Northern’s boys track team placed in four events at Saginaw Valley. Ryan Hunt was second in the pole vault with a height of 13-0, while Alex Lubbers was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 seconds. Brad Hunt finished seventh in the 400 with a time of 54.3 seconds, joining Ty Dickinson, Bradley Mallory and Matt Thomas on the distance medley relay team, which placed third with a time of 11:11.
