Cal Poly senior John Prader broke a 16-year-old school record in the men’s pole vault Saturday afternoon during the Mustangs’ home dual track and field meet against UC Santa Barbara, clearing 18-feet, 7-inches.
The jump broke Sean Brown’s previous record of 18 feet, 6.75 inches set in 1997.”I just figured there is no reason to be second place anywhere so I knew the school record was 18-6.5 and since I was jumping well I might as well go for broke and throw it up at the school record and give it some attempts,” said Prader, who ranks third in the nation in Division I this season. A vaulter at Ole Miss leads the country with a jump of 19 feet, 3/4 inch.
Next up for the Mustangs are the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships that will start with the multi-events on May 3-4. That will be followed up the next weekend with the standard events. The championships will be hosted by Cal State Northridge.
