GRESHAM — South Eugene’s Simon Park won his second state title in three years in the pole vault on Friday, getting a measure of redemption after his disappointing performance last season.
Park cleared 16 feet, 6 inches to get the victory on the opening day of the OSAA Class 6A boys track and field championship meet at Mt. Hood Community College.
The Harvard-bound senior, who is ranked sixth nationally with a personal-best of 16-9, also won the state title as a sophomore in 2017 but didn’t clear a bar last season despite coming into the meet as the heavy favorite.
Park had no such issues Friday. After passing on the first four heights, Park jumped once the bar reached 14-3. He cleared that height on his second attempt and then needed just one attempt at 15-0 — the height he couldn’t get over last season at the state meet — and one at 15-6.
