With only two boys having cleared five metres this season, French athlete Matthias Orban and South African Valco van Wyk will turn out as the favourites on paper.
Orban boasts a career best of 5.12, which is 12 centimetres higher than Van Wyk’s best, and he will be confident of targeting the gold medal.
Due to a small field of 10 boys, the pole vault will be contested as a straight final, and much like the girls’ event, there will be a wide open battle for podium positions.
