Randall vaulter wins title at Relays

After finishing third as a junior last year, Randall’s Kati Culpepper accomplished a season goal by capturing the pole vault championship at 10-foot-6 at the 65th annual Amarillo Relays on a gorgeous day at Dick Bivins.

Randall has won that event at Amarillo Relays for three straight years, with Morgan Moore taking gold in 2012 and 2013.

“I came in focused and ready to go,” said Culpepper, who was also a first team all-district setter. “I’ve always had that competition of coming in behind (Moore), and she pushed me. She gave me the motivation to go higher and push her. Now being the top girl at Randall, I’m pushing the other girls, but it is also showing that I can do things that I didn’t think I could do.”

Culpepper, who will pole vault for Texas A&M-Commerce next year, was the last competitor of the event at 9-foot-6. She cleared that height on her second jump, and had no problems with 10 feet. The standout then cleared 10-foot-6, outlasting Canyon’s Ellie Skalsky and Clovis’ Heather Pastirchak for the victory.

“Coming in at 9-foot-6 and coming in last just helps me save up for these bigger heights,” Culpepper said. “The higher you go, the more energy you have and the faster you have to be. I would have been worn out if I came out earlier.”

Culpepper cleared 11 feet, but came up short going for 11-foot-6 and fell short of her personal best 12 feet.

“I always shoot for my personal best,” Culpepper said. “Sometimes the weather or the wind comes into play. Today was great for weather, but my technique wasn’t all the way there and my big pull wasn’t there yet. But I’m getting better with all of that.”

Other highlights include the Caprock boys 800 meter relay team setting the meet record in the prelims Friday at 1:27:52. The previous record was held by Palo Duro with a time of 1:28.88.

Amarillo High’s Samantha Nolan, a state qualifier in the high jump last year won Friday’s event with a jump of 5-foot-6.

Tascosa junior Markaaisha Richardson could start a big weekend, winning the long jump with a 17-6½ jump. Richardson will go for a threepeat in the 300 hurdles. Richardson is the current record holder in the event at the Amarillo Relays with a time of 3.34.
