RB sophomore wins state pole vault title

Ashley Callahan, a sophomore pole vaulter at Rancho Bernardo High, has a new first name.

Her middle name has changed to Ashley because her first name is now State Champion.

Callahan captured the pole vault championship at the annual CIF State Championships at Clovis Buchanan High last Saturday. She cleared 13-feet, 4-inches on her third and final attempt.

“I was shocked when I watched the replay and saw how much the bar wobbled,’’ Callahan said. “I was an inch or two from being nothing.

“I really wanted to go 13-7, but on my first two tries I blew through the poles. Heck, I got 13-4 on my final try and no one had made that height at that point, so I was pretty sure I had it.’’

She still had to sit and wait for the remainder of the pole vault field to finish.
