WESTBORO — Ed McCarthy concluded his high school track and field career with a season filled with memory making moments.
The recently graduated North Middlesex senior won the pole vault at the Central/Western Mass. Division 1 Championships, placed second at the state meet and thrice raised his school record, topping out at 14 feet. That also was the best jump in the state this spring.
McCarthy, a T&G Super Team selection, did come up short of his high standards in his final meet, placing 15th at the New Englands the day after he graduated. His jump of 12-6 was his lowest of the season in a major meet.
“It’s a very busy time, end of the year with a lot of stuff going on,” the amiable McCarthy said Wednesday prior to a Patriot Pole Vault Club practice at Westboro High. “So I didn’t really get the most sleep or most preparedness for the meet, and then I had to drive all the way to Saco, Maine, to compete.
“Otherwise, I was satisfied with everything else that happened during the season.”
