Renaud Lavillenie thwarted in new pole vault world record bid

He had to be satisfied with a best of 6.01m in an indoor meeting at Nevers, central France.

The performance was the best in the world this season and the ninth time the 28-year-old had cleared the symbolic six-metre barrier.

“Why would I be disappointed? I did 6.01m — it was a successful evening,” said the Frenchman.

“I missed the world record but I had some fine attempts. I`m super happy with my evening`s work.”

Lavillenie, who set the world record of 6.16m in Donetsk in February last year, had also reached six metres in Rouen two weeks ago.
