Angelique Urenda seemed destined to become a high school pole vaulter.

Members of Urenda’s family were friends with local pole vault guru/coach Mark Pierson since she was a little girl. He always asked the youngster when she might try the event.

Fast-forward to the present. Now a senior at South High School, Urenda cleared a career-best 10-feet last season.

“I decided to try pole vault and it is really fun,” said the 5-foot-3 Urenda, who tied for 10th at the Class 4A state meet last year at 9-6.
