Though she felt beautiful in a flowing blue gown with rhinestones, Christy Brewer was still hesitant at the thought of dancing at her prom.
Three weeks ago, the 18-year-old Riverhead High School senior fractured her ankle while pole vaulting after landing on a mat awkwardly during her school’s track meet.
“Oh, we’re gonna dance,” said her date, Ryan Schroeher, 17. “I’ll just throw her over my shoulder and we’ll get it done. We’ll dance.
Brewer and her date were among the nearly 150 Riverhead High students who began the night at the school and ended it dancing at their prom at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown Thursday.
First, parents took pictures of the students while they were called by name to walk a makeshift runway on stage in the school’s auditorium.
Then students drank punch, nibbled on fruit and chatted among themselves in the cafeteria.
Afterward, hoards of students loaded buses taking them to the catering hall.
Walking slowly to the bus in crutches, Brewer managed to wave goodbye to family and friends.
“It’s the last night we will all have together as a class, so I’m not going to let this fractured ankle stop me from having a good time,” she said.
