Sam Kendricks, Pauls Pujats both qualify for men’s pole vault final

Sam Kendricks, who attended Ole Miss from 2012-2014, qualified for the men’s pole vault final in Rio with a vault of 5.70m.

Kendricks is the first Rebel to ever win a U.S. track and field title. Not only does he continue to represent Ole Miss, but he grew up in Oxford, Mississippi.

Pauls Pujats, who is representing Latvia, but attended University of Memphis from 2012-2015, also qualified with a 5.60m vault.

In 2012, Pujats missed the cut for the Summer Games in London. That disappointment made him more determined than ever to compete in Rio.

“I went to qualify for London Olympic Games…I missed out by 10 centimeters,” Pujats remembered.

Refusing to give up his dream of being an Olympian, Pujats will now compete for a medal in the pole vault final.

The men’s pole vault final will be held Monday at 6:35 p.m.
