Chapel Hill, N.C. – Tyler Samotis rose up for a 1st place performance in the men’s pole vault to lead a strong showing for Gardner-Webb track & field at the Tar Heel Open on Saturday.
Samotis, a redshirt sophomore from Hendersonville, N.C., won the men’s pole vault event in a solid bounce-back performance, recording a height of 4.85 m to win the event on Saturday. Fellow sophomore Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) cleared 4.30 m, 6th best at the Open.
Gardner-Webb freshman Elise Moffat (Kennesaw, Ga.) cleared 3.20 m in the women’s pole vault, good for 8th place in the event.
Junior Ben Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) finished 17th in the men’s long jump on Saturday, turning in a distance of 5.93 m on his first jump in the competition.
Bell and fellow multi-athlete Titus Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) competed in the 60 m hurdles, placing 22nd (9.30) and 23rd (9.42), respectively.
Sophomore Marquise Evans raced to a time of 7.58 in the men’s 60 m dash during Saturday’s prelims session. The Mebane, N.C. native also competed in the 200 m dash, timing in at 24.98 (33rd) in the event.
In the men’s high jump, freshman Seaver Wait (Candler, N.C.) placed 10th, topping 1.85 m.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs return to action for the two-day JDL Invitational, lasting Friday, January 31 – Saturday, February 1 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
