With the ACC Indoor Championships looming this week, the Virginia men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams sent a select number of participants to compete at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday.
With two entries in the men’s distance medley and one entry in the women’s pole vault, the Cavaliers yielded a high success rate. First up, the team of freshman Matthew Novak, sophomore Kenneth Hagen and juniors Henry Wynne and Nathan Kiley finished first with a time of 9:35.60. This achievement is significant since the top 12 teams in each relay event qualify for the NCAA Championships. Currently, Virginia is seventh in the men’s distance medley with that time after the flat track conversion time of 9:27.70.
On the women’s side, sophomore Bridget Guy won the women’s pole vault. Clearing a height of 4.10 meters — she surpassed the rest of her competition.
The full Cavalier indoor track and field team will be back in action Feb. 25-27 to compete for the ACC indoor conference title in Boston, Mass.
