Shawn Barber Blog: Pole Vaulter Set To Compete in Russia

Zips freshman All-American Shawn Barber, who won the Canadian Pole Vault Championship last month, will be competing around the globe this summer in a number of elite meets. To help follow his progress, the Texas native and two-time Mid-American Conference champ will be checking in with blog entries over the course of the next two months.

This week, Barber will be competing at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), this year’s Universiade is expected to draw more than 10,400 University athletes from 162 countries.

Barber, who broke the Canadian National Pole Vault record with a jump of 18-08.5 at the Texas Relays last March, is set to compete in Kazan Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.

Greetings from Russia!

All is well so far. I should have pretty good access to WIFI while I’m here so I should be able to keep you all fairly. So far my time here has been pretty straight forward, just practicing every day and trying to get ready for the big meet!

I attached a few pics; one of the practice track and some of the stadium and village. I’ll do my best to keep you all updated over the next month or two.

Until next time, GO ZIPS!
