Simmons Sets Pole Vault Record at Ohio State Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Allyson Simmons set a new school indoor record in the pole vault in only her third meet with the Buckeyes, clearing 3.90 meters (12-9.50) for a first-place finish and highlighting action at the Ohio State Invitational Friday afternoon at French Field House.

The previous record – 3.80 meters/12-5.50 – was set by Becky Heintz in 2004. Simmons, from Fairless, Ohio, is the Ohio high school all-division record holder in the pole vault at 4.07 meters (13-4.25).

The Buckeye women also impressed in the 400-meter dash as freshman Beatrice Hannan and sophomore Aaliyah Barnes finished first and second, respectively, posting the No. 1 and No. 2 times in the Big Ten this season in the process. Hannan, competing in her first 400 as a Buckeye, completed the race in a time of 54.44 while Barnes finished close behind in 54.49 seconds. Both times rank among the 25 fastest in Division I this season.

Earning victories in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes was senior Chesna Sykes. Sykes turned in a season-best time of 7.46 seconds in the 60 and a time of 24.64 in her first 200 competition of the season.

On the men’s side, freshman Donovan Robertson won the 60-meter hurdles for second time this season and second time in as many weeks. Currently ranked No. 2 nationally in the 60 hurdles with a season-best time of 7.76, Robertson crossed the finish line in a winning time of 7.89 seconds.

Sophomore Aaron Zedella used a personal-best throw of 19.68 meters (64-7.00) to win the weight throw.

At the conclusion of competition, the newly-combined men’s and women’s track and field program hosted former Buckeyes for an alumni reunion and dinner. Former teammates socialized and met the 2015 team and coaching staff. Up Next Ohio State heads to Notre Dame, Ind., Feb. 6-7 for the Meyo Invitational.
