Skyward Swede: Gothenburg’s Tyce Hruza breaks SWC pole vault record previously held by Bump Novacek

COZAD — Tyce Hruza set yet another milestone on Saturday at the Southwest Conference Track and Field Meet.

A little over two weeks ago the defending Class B state pole vault champion set a new state all-class record of 16 feet, 7¼ inches at the Dutch Zorn Invite, breaking the old record of 16-7 set by Beatrice’s Seth Burney in 2006.

On Saturday, Hruza added to his resume by clearing 16-1 to break Gothenburg legend Bump Novacek’s SWC Meet record of 16 feet set in 1983.

“It feels good,” Hruza said. “It’s not the first time I’ve jumped 16 (feet) this year, so I was trying to go a little higher.”

The Gothenburg senior then tried to break his own record by clearing 16-9, but came up just short on three attempts.
