Alysha Newman will be a medal favourite in pole vault heading into the world track and field championships later this month.
The 25-year-old Mother Teresa grad grabbed bronze at the prestigious Diamond League final this past weekend in Brussels, Belgium with a 4.77-metre effort, five centimetres short of her personal record.
Newman cleared 4.77 on her second attempt, then tapped out at 4.83. Greece’s Katerina Stefanidi captured gold by clearing 4.83 on her first attempt. Russian Anzhelika Sidorova was second, also at 4.83, but lost to Stefanidi on countback.
