Pole vaulter Alana Boyd is confident she has made the right move by switching her training base from Perth back to Queensland.

The reigning Commonwealth champion made the decision soon after the 2012 London Olympics – a period when she was still dealing with the disappointment of crashing out well short of her personal best in the final.

It ended a three-year stint in WA that had to that point culminated in one of Boyd’s best seasons, only for a major letdown at her second Olympics.

The 29-year-old said family had been the main motivation for her return to Brisbane, where she has reunited in a training sense with her father, coach and fellow Commonwealth Games champion, Ray.

“There were a number of reasons, but I just felt it was time for me to move back to Queens-land and work with my dad again,” Boyd said.

“The condition of the Perth track when I was there wasn’t too bad to be honest.

“It obviously then rapidly deteriorated.”

The sea change failed to yield any initial results, with Boyd forced to withdraw from last year’s world championships after needing surgery on the plantaris tendon in her foot.

With the rehabilitation behind her, the spring is firmly back in Boyd’s step.

She has already twice made the Olympic qualifying height in one of her best starts to a season, clearing 4.61m in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Boyd also won the pole vault final at the Adelaide Track Classic three days ago.

Her goals for the season are defending her Commonwealth title and improving on her career-best clearance of 4.76m.

Boyd is hoping the latter of those two achievements can come as early as Saturday’s Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic, when she returns to her former stomping ground to compete.

“I’m really happy with the shape and form I’m in at the moment,” she said.
