State champion pole vaulter Kami Berryhill signs with ACU track and field

Midland Christian’s two-time state champion pole vaulter and state record holder Kami Berryhill recently signed a National Letter of Intent to begin competing for Abilene Christian’s Track and Field program starting in 2015.

Berryhill comes to Abilene with a career best pole vault height of 12-feet, 8 inches, which would rank her among the Wildcats’ top-10 all-time performers both indoors and outdoors. She also is a stout competitor in the long jump (17-8.75), 100-meter hurdles (15.27 seconds), 100-meter dash (12.68) and on relays.

Berryhill’s 4×200-meter relay won at the district, regional and state level last spring, giving her 10 postseason relay championships in three seasons. Her 4×100 won the past three district titles in addition to the 2012 regional crown, while her 4×400 won the 2012 district championship. Her 4×200 squad also was a regional champion in 2012 and district winner in 2011.

Since 2011, Berryhill has collected 10 district championships through six events and captured seven regional titles. Her regional championship total includes three first-place showings in the pole vault and one in the long jump (2012), plus three in the relays.

Berryhill is the younger sister of former Texas football player Jamison Berryhill and ACU pole vaulter, Angie Aguilar. Both Angie and her husband, Cory, were championship pole vaulters during their time here in the mid-2000s. Cory and Angie returned to their alma mater last summer to serve as assistants to head track and field coach Keith Barnier.

“We’re very excited that Kami chose ACU,” said Cory, who was a four-time all-America and Lone Star Conference Champion, “and adding her to our vault group is a big step forward in the rebuilding process of our pole vault program. She is a great athlete, student, and person who will be a huge asset to both our team and group.”

While at ACU, Berryhill plans to major in kinesiology and hopes to become a physical therapist. Her work in the classroom has resulted in academic all-state honors and membership in the National Honor Society.
