Steve Hooker’s 5.72 metre pole vault in Poland has inspired fellow athletes and Australian fans who congratulated the defending Olympic champion on social media.
Athletics teammate Henry Frayne tweeted: “@stevehookerpv good job tonight champ. see you in toners tomorrow!”
Since booking his Olympic spot at his indoor training venue in Perth in early May, Hooker had failed to clear more than 5.42m prior to Saturday’s much-needed third placing.
In a show of sportsmanship, Hooker tweeted to British Steve Lewis who won the competition with a 5.82 metre jump: “A massive congratulations to @AirLewis a huge pb on the eve of #London2012. So happy for you mate, even of (sic) you beat me today 😉 #582”
The Australian Olympic Committee tweeted: “@stevehookerpv good work tonight. Looking forward to u arriving in London. #august10peak”.
Australian fan Jayne Bennett posted on Hooker’s Facebook page: “Sending my mantra for the next few weeks ‘I believe in Steve’ awesome jump, go get them!”
Hooker will jump in London on August 8.
