WATCH out next time your out in Hanley… Steve Lewis has just shown his world class form pole vaulting in a shopping centre.
The 27-year-old matched Olympic champion and world record holder Renaund Lavillenie by clearing 5m 71cm at Drake Relays Vault in the Mall in Iowa.
It was a season’s best leap by the Light Oaks Olympian before he and Lavilleni both failed attempts at 5.81m, which would have established a new event record.
Lavilleni, who had vaulted 5.71m at the second try, took gold on count back.
Lewis said: “It gives me plenty of confidence for the season.
“This is only my second competition back and I didn’t compete indoors so this was like a little taste of an indoor season for me, which is awesome.”
