Still soaring: 17-year-old Lafayette pole vaulter Armand Duplantis qualifies for final at world championships

A little more than four months after shattering the world junior record in the pole vault, Armand “Mondo” Duplantis made more history Sunday at the IAAF world championships in London.

The senior-to-be at Lafayette High School became the youngest athlete to reach the men’s pole vault final at the world championships when he was one of eight competitors to clear 18 feet, 8¼ inches in the qualification round at London Stadium.

Duplantis, who turns 18 on Nov. 10, will have the opportunity to participate in the 12-man final Tuesday at 1:35 p.m. at the age of 17 years, 271 days.
