Sumner student, coach travel to world track championships

The IAAF World Youth Championships is currently being contested in Donetsk, Ukraine July 10-15, 2013. Hammond resident and 2008 Olympian Erica Bartolina is one of three coaches on the USA team staff who selected and oversees the top 43 Youth athletes ages 16-17 from the USA competing in the track and field championships. One of the athletes who was selected to represent the USA is Devin King of Kentwood, LA. Devin King is the top ranked pole vaulter in the world for the youth, having a personal best mark of 17’3”. King has been instructed by Coach Bartolina since he started vaulting in 2011, and quickly developed into a top ranked pole vaulter. A Louisiana state Champion for Jewel Sumner High School, Devin looks to bring home the gold from the World Championships. The qualifying round at the Championships was Friday, and King easily cleared the automatic qualifying height of 15’11” to advance him to the finals. He will compete Sunday, July 14 on the last day of the Championships. King enters the competition as the favorite.
