TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama junior Lakan Taylor won the women’s pole vault and freshman Will Herrscher finished fourth in the men’s pole vault at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile on Friday night.
Taylor’s vault of 13 feet, 7 ¼ inches (4.15 meters) led a 1-2-7 finish by the Tide women’s pole vaulters. Senior Anna Reed tied for second at 12-11 ½ (3.95m) while junior Britainy Smith cleared 12-5 ½ (3.80m) for seventh place in the event. Taylor’s effort was just shy of her outdoor season best of 13-8 1/4 (4.17m) set last weekend at the Battle on the Bayou.
On the men’s side Herrscher, who was named the SEC Men’s Freshman of the Week for his winning effort at LSU’s Battle on the Bayou a week ago, cleared 16-9 ½ (5.12m) to finish fourth while sophomore Jake Zalesky topped out at 14-10 (4.52m).
The remainder of the Alabama track and field team was off this weekend. The full squad will return to action at the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn, April 22 and 23.
