EUGENE, Ore. — Senior/junior pole vaulter Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) of the University of Michigan women’s track and field team improved upon her own school record to finish 10th in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday (June 7) at the University of Oregon’s historic Hayward Field.

Tobel had a bit of a slow start, clearing the opening height of 4.25 meters (13-11.25) on her first attempt, but she got over the next two bars of 4.05 meters (13-3.5) and 4.15 meters (13-7.25) on her second attempt. Tobel made the decision to pass at 4.20 meters (13-9.25) before clearing a new career-best height of 4.25 meters (13-11.25). That height increased her own school record of 4.24 meters (13-11), which she set a year ago. She made three solid attempts at 4.30 meters (14-1.25) but missed all three to finish.

It marks the second straight year Tobel finished the national outdoor competition in 10th place to earn All-America second team honors.

South Dakota’s Bethany Buell won the women’s pole vault, tying an NCAA-meet record of 4.45 meters (14-7.25).
