After its third match, ASU track and field found its groove and is firing on all cylinders.
Both the men and women’s teams left Flagstaff with another successful road trip under their belts.
Coach Greg Kraft has emphasized that the 2013 Mountain “T’s” Invitational at NAU was for experience to further progress his athletes.
Many of the Sun Devils did just that. Several set seasonal and personal bests. Some even put their name in the ASU history books.
Redshirt junior pole vaulter Derick Hinch was one of the new names in the history books.
Hinch’s 5.50m (18-00.50 ft) jump was only the second time a jump had been accomplished of over 18 feet in ASU history.
“It felt really good,” Hinch said. “My run was feeling really consistent and allowed me to work on the more technical part of the vault. My goal is to break the school record and consistently jump over 18 feet.”
Only Olympic gold medalist Nick Hyson was the other for the Sun Devils to jump over 18 feet.
Hinch led the No. 5 men along with fellow redshirt junior runner Ryan Milus, who placed first in the preliminary and second in the final 60m with a seasonal best 6.71.
ASU will travel to the northwest for the Husky Invitational this weekend to face some of their first Pac-12 rivals.
