Julia Fixsen is Minnesota’s best-ever female pole vaulter but the Mounds View senior will miss that event in next week’s state meet, where she is the two-time defending champion.
Fixsen, who qualified for state in three other events, did not place in pole vault because she “no-heighted,” meaning she failed three times on her first height.
The athlete who routinely clears 13 feet, and holds the state record of 13-9 1/4, started at 12-7 and went 0-for-3, blowing through on her first effort, and going under the bar twice. The two state qualifiers each went 11-1.
Fixsen, a University of Georgia recruit, will still compete in three events at state with a good chance to medal in each. She placed second in 100 hurdles Friday, with 15.30. On Wednesday, she won long jump and placed second in high jump.
