EUGENE, Ore. – “TrackTown Tuesdays” will turn 10 years old in 2016.
From humble beginnings in the spring of 2007, when a few curious fans wandered into the Bowerman Building at Hayward Field to hear about plans for the upcoming 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, these free town hall meetings have evolved into a highly anticipated community event on the first Tuesday of each month during track season.
To celebrate this special 10th anniversary season, the first “TrackTown Tuesday” of the New Year will expand its footprint to Portland on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Doors open at 6 p.m. The one-hour show starts at 7 p.m.
The “TrackTown Tuesday” event will be held in conjunction with an open house at the “House of Track,” the unofficial name of a Portland warehouse at 2400 NW Front Avenue where the finishing touches are being applied to a new 200-meter banked oval track.
Once completed, the track will be open for a series of training and competitive opportunities in January and February. It will then be disassembled and transported to the Oregon Convention Center where it will be rebuilt in time for the USATF Indoor Championships (March 11-12) and the IAAF World Indoor Championships Portland 2016 (March 17-20).
Besides raising awareness for these championship meets, the “TrackTown Tuesday” event on Jan. 5 will feature special guests from the Nike Oregon Project and the Bowerman Track Club, plus more information on the planned indoor meets. TrackTown USA President Vin Lananna will serve as the host and former UO three-sport star Jordan Kent will be the emcee.
Stay tuned for more details and many surprises.
