Trip to Rio on line for Pueblo vaulter

There’s nothing official — yet — to say he’s in, but Pueblo native Sam Pierson is counting on being in the men’s pole vault field when the U.S. Olympic Trials open Friday in Portland, Ore.

Pierson virtually assured himself a spot in the 24-man competition when he soared 18 feet, 4 1/4 inches this past Sunday at a U.S. Track & Field Federation-sanctioned meet in Denver.

Pierson missed the automatic qualifying height of 18-5 1/2, but ranks 20th heading into this week’s trials.

“They don’t update the official list until two days before (the meet). I haven’t spoken with anybody, but if you look at the entries you can count the order and see who are the top 24,” Pierson said.
