AUSTIN — As meet records fell in the high school girls pole vault at the 86th edition of the Texas Relays, Saint Mary’s Hall’s Shay Petty and New Braunfels’ Sara Kathryn Stevens got as close as possible to an area record Saturday.
Both cleared 13 feet, 3/4 inches at Myers Stadium, just shy of the area record of 13-11/2. Since neither could clear the next height of 13-43/4 the area record set by New Braunfels’ Demi Payne in 2010 stays intact for now.
“We were right there,” Petty said. “We’re both juniors and we have more meets coming up, so I think we’ll both get there. It would have been nice today, though.”
Stevens finished fourth, and Petty finished fifth, as Waco Midway’s Annie Rhodes and Saginaw Boswell’s Lakan Taylor set a meet record by clearing 13-81/2.
