UA’s Shawn Barber wins second consecutive NCAA pole vault title

University of Akron junior Shawn Barber recorded a mark of 19 feet, 4¾ inches to win the national championship in the pole vault at the 2015 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday.

Barber broke his own collegiate record of 19-4¼ and defeated Tennessee junior Jake Blankenship by almost five inches to claim his second consecutive national title.

Seniors Brittany Funk and Alexis Cooks finished in fifth place and in 10th place in the weight throw. Senior Claudia Garcia Jou finished second in the high jump to lead the Zips women.

Freshman Jordan Latimer placed 10th in the men’s long jump.

Matthias Tayala finished in sixth place in the weight throw to lead the Kent State men at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Dior Delophont finished eighth in the high jump and William Barnes finished in 15th place in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles.


Nick Jensen-Clegg allowed three hits and struck out seven through seven innings to lead Kent State to a 13-5 win over Rider on Friday in Kent.

Conner Simonetti and Dylan Rosa each hit two-run home runs and Luca Fuscardo had an RBI double and an RBI single to lead the Flashes (7-6).

The Flashes host Rider on Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission to Saturday and Sunday’s games is free.

• The series opener between the University of Akron and host Davidson was postponed by rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.


The University of Akron defeated Wagner and George Mason at the Cherry Blossom Classic on Friday in Fairfax, Va.

The Zips (10-11) defeated the Seahawks 5-1 in the first game and defeated the Patriots 6-3 in the second game.

Junior pitcher Erin Seiler earned the win in both games. Seiler struck out 13 in the complete-game victory in the first game and struck out nine batters in the second game.

Kelsey Parker hit a solo home run in the first game, and Savannah Fruin and Sara Pearson each homered in the second game for the Zips.


The University of Akron and Iowa State will meet on Sept. 23, 2017, at InfoCision Stadium.
