UH pole vaulter Robert Platt Jr. killed in boat crash

Robert Platt Jr., a sophomore pole vaulter for the University of Houston, was killed in a boat crash Wednesday.

He was 20.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson in Burnet County, according to details provided by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Platt was with eight other people on the boat at the time of the crash. No other injuries were reported.

An investigation into the crash is underway. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

“I cannot express how devastated everyone in the Houston Track and Field program is,” head coach Leroy Burrell said in a statement. “Robert was an outstanding young man, and our team was blessed to have him as a part of it for two years. We share our condolences with Kaddie, their family and friends, and all who knew and loved Robert.”
