Univ. of Arkansas sending 17 athletes to Rio

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) – With August comes the Summer Olympics and this year 17 athletes past and current from the University of Arkansas will compete at the 2016 games.

Among the list includes Tyson Gay who has competed in the last two Olympics. In 2012, Tyson Gay won a silver medal in the 4×100 meters relay but was disqualified after testing positive for a banned substance. This year, he hopes to medal and remove the tarnish of the disqualification.

Another on the list is pole vaulter and Cabot-native Lexi Weeks. Lexi recently qualified by jumping a personal best 15-5. This will be her first Olympics and she joins her teammate Sandi Morris in the pole vault competition.

Sports blog, Arkansas Fight, compiled a list of the names and nations of all the competing athletes.

Seven countries will be represented by University of Arkansas alumni and current athletes. That list includes USA, Jamaica, Nigeria, South Africa, Slovenia, Sweden, and Trinidad & Tobago. USA leads the pack with seven while Jamaica has four and South Africa sending two.

THV11 wishes luck to all the athletes from the University of Arkansas that compete in the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.
