University’s Ewing third in pole vault at state track and field meet

University High School’s Burke Ewing finished third on Friday in the Class 3A boys pole vault at the Colorado High School Activities Association Track and Field Championships.

The meet is in its second of three days at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

Ewing, the Bulldogs junior who earned third with a personal-best vault of 13-feet, 6 inches, said a change in his mindset and mentality helped with his results in the biggest meet of the year.

Ewing competed at the St. Vrain Invitational on May 11, and he didn’t have a good day, clearing only 12-7.

Ewing realized the weather leading up to the invitational was rotten — rainy and cold — and he let it cloud his meet-day performance. With clearer skies at home this week leading to state, Ewing’s disposition was sunnier.
