Junior Michael McPherson and freshman Bennie Foster led the way for the Utah Valley University track and field teams on Friday at the 2014 Utah Spring Classic in Salt Lake City as McPherson won the 200-meter dash, as well as placed second in the long jump, while Foster set a school record in the pole vault.
McPherson, who has been named the WAC Athlete of the Week twice already during the outdoor season, took home the 200m dash title at Utah’s McCarthey Family Track and Field on Friday evening with a blazing time of 21.42 seconds. The Wolverine junior also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.17m. Foster on the other hand eclipsed her very own school record in the pole vault by clearing 3.67m. The freshman Foster’s vault was good enough to tie for fourth place in the event.
Freshman hurdler Kyler Sprague also had a big meet for the UVU men’s team as he finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.81 seconds and sixth in the 110m hurdles (14.80).
Senior jumper Autumn Robertson had a solid showing for the women’s squad as she took third in the high jump by clearing 1.57m.
The Utah Valley women also received notable performances from freshmanSamantha Reeves (fifth, 100m, 12.29) and senior Ali Shields (seventh, 100m hurdles, 14.43 and seventh, long jump, 5.43m), while sophomore Trac Norris(sixth, 800m, 1:52.08) also fared well for the men’s team.
The third annual Utah Spring Classic consisted of athletes from Utah, UVU, BYU, Utah State, Weber State, Westminster, Idaho State, Montana State and Wyoming.
The Wolverine men and women continue their seasons on Saturday at Weber State. The Weber State Invitational gets underway at 10 a.m. at Stewart Stadium in Ogden.
