Cincinnati sophomore and All-American pole vaulter Adrian Valles competed at the 2015 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Beijing, China.
Valles, who was one of 35 athletes in the world to qualify for the World Championships, cleared 17’ 8.5” to finish 16th in his flight. The Pamplona, Spain, native did not advance to the finals since he was unable to clear the qualifying mark of 18’ 8.25”, which would have been a new personal best topping his previous of 18’ 6.5”. Valles had one attempt at the qualifying mark but was unable to make it over the bar.
The IAAF World Championships caps off a remarkable first year at Cincinnati for the Spaniard. Valles earned first-team All-America honors during the indoor and outdoor seasons along with grabbing the indoor and outdoor American Athletic Conference pole vault titles. The freshman also holds the conference’s and UC’s pole vault record for indoors (17’ 11.25”) and outdoors (18’ 6.5”).
