Valley sports briefs: Clovis pole vault event lines up ex-Olympians

Five former Olympians will be at the 18th North American Pole Vaulting Championships in Old Town Clovis on Aug. 3.

Nick Hysong, the 2000 Olympic gold-medalist, and 2008 Olympian April Steiner-Bennett will compete in the event. Ron Morris, who won the silver in the 1964 Olympics, will be on hand as a sponsor. Stacy Dragila, the 2000 gold medalist, and 2008 Olympian Erica Bartolina will coach the teams.

The high school competition will be made up of athletes from New Orleans, Reno, San Diego, Los Angeles, Hanford and Clovis.

The elite competition will feature 2010 NCAA champion Jordan Scott (Kansas) and Notre Dame’s Mary Saxer.

Competition begins at 5 p.m.

The Fresno State volleyball alumni match will be held Aug. 18 at the Save Mart Center.

The match, free and open to the public, starts at 1 p.m.

Fresno State opens the season Aug. 24 at the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational against Texas-El Paso.

Kohl Simas had a grand slam to help power the River Park 12-year-old Little League All-Stars to a 12-5 victory over Lakeside of Granite Bay/Loomis in Fremont on Monday.

Nick Caviglia pitched 2 1/3 and had six strikeouts to earn the win. River Park will play in the winner’s bracket final at 5 p.m. today against Petaluma National.

Sam Tookoian and Evan Wallace combined for a no-hitter as the Bullard 8-year-old All-Stars routed Carbone, Utah, 25-0 at the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional in Riverton, Utah, on Tuesday.

Evan Wallace was 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs for Bullard.

Bullard will play host Riverton at 2:30 p.m. today.
