A TEACHER and a student from Rayleigh’s FitzWimarc School have been chosen to compete in pole vaulting events this summer.

PE teacher Kate Cowley – a former Commonwealth Games athlete – competed at the Welsh International last week at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
She came fourth against international and Olympic athletes from places like Africa and New Zealand.

Pupil Jack Long will compete on August 17 and 18 at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium in the England Athletics Under-20s competition.
Jack was recently crowned the number one athlete in England in his age category.

He was given the ranking by the English Schools Athletics Association.
School spokesperson Glenda Canham said: “We are very excited for both Kate and Jack and very proud of them.
“The FitzWimarc has a very good reputation when it comes to sporting events, often beating very prestigious private schools.”
