When she was barely old enough to run, Grace Shaffer fell for the pole vault. She pulled together two trash barrels, placed a stick across them as a bar and then grasped a broomstick for a pole.
“We never had a straight broomstick in our house,” Shaffer said of her youthful fascination with the event, which has stuck.
As a freshman for Cody High, she is one of the best girls pole vaulters in Wyoming. Now 15, no track and field fan is surprised.
