Wando junior Dillon McCarthy set a new school record with the highest pole vault in the state this season at the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic Saturday at Dutch Fork Stadium in Irmo.

McCarthy soared to a personal best of 16 feet, three inches, winning the event by nine inches and falling just five short of the all-time meet record. He hadn’t reached higher than 14-6 yet this season.

McCarthy’s previous best outdoors was 15-6, set midway through last season. He hit 16-0 indoors in January at the National Pole Vault Summit. His vault on Saturday would have won last year’s AAAAA state championship by nine inches.
