Warwick pole vaulter Thompson sets record — and then she didn’t

WEST POINT — This is a lesson for people who decide to leave early from track and field meets.

A controversial ending to the boys 1,600-meter relay was rich in disagreement and bitter feelings, but in the midst of the rancor was a thunderous cheer from one end of Gillis Fieldhouse as Warwick’s Kaeli Thompson thought she broke the Section 9 record in the pole vault.

Thompson cleared 13 feet, one-quarter inch, thinking she had broken a record held by former O’Neill standout Megan Clark (later of Duke fame).
