ST. LOUIS – Daren McDonough is climbing trees these days instead of soaring over a bar with the help of a pole, but his athletic skills still come in handy.
At Edwardsville High School, McDonough won back-to-back Class AA championships in the pole vault in 1991 and 1992, setting a state record during his senior season that would last for 18 years. He was the fifth-ever Edwardsville athlete to win an individual state championship in boys track and field and the second to win back-to-back years.
