EUGENE, Ore.-Jack Whitt’s illustrious career came to an end at the NCAA National Championship as the senior was crowned an All-American for the seventh time, finishing runner-up in the pole vault competition on Thursday.
Whitt tied his winning height at last year’s NCAA National Championships (18-6.5, 5.70m), but it wasn’t enough this year as Sam Kendricks from Ole Miss was able to clear (18-8.25, 5.70m). The victory for Kendricks means that in the last three NCAA Championships, there have been three different national champions in the pole vault.
On the track, fellow senior Jeffery Gibson was able to continue his season as he finished seventh in semifinals of the 400m hurdles, earning a spot in the finals, which will be contested on Friday. Gibson struggled over the first hurdle on his lap but recovered to finish third in his heat at 50.40, just 0.01 seconds out of an automatic spot in the finals. His time held up against the rest of the field, landing Gibson one of the two at-large spots in the finals.
Morrie Turner continues the action for the Golden Eagles in Eugene, Ore., as he competes in the long jump at 6:30 p.m. (Central) on Thursday. Gibson and the finals of the 400m hurdles will run Friday at 6:40 p.m. (Central).
